August is National Brake Safety Awareness Month

Courtesy Palm Harbor Honda is here to remind you that August is National Brake Safety Month! We would like to remind you that brake inspection is often an overlooked task. We all often focus on having our tires rotated and our oil changed, but often ignore our brakes.  It is incredibly important to make sure you have your brakes inspected on a regular basis.

Since we use our brakes constantly it’s normal for them to wear and eventually need to be replaced. There are several factors that affect the way your brakes wear, including your driving habits, vehicle type, operating conditions, and the quality of the brake lining material.

There are some common warning signs you should look for to find out when your brakes need to be inspected. They include:

Screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.

Your vehicle pulling to one side while braking.

Your brake pedal nearly touching the floor before engaging.

You having to apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.

If your brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.

Brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking conditions.

If your brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.

Here’s one of the biggest reasons why people often ignore their brakes. It’s because there is no defined schedule that informs you of when it’s time to replace your brake pads. The general rule of thumb is to have your brakes inspected every 6 months. However, if it’s been at least 12 months since you’ve had them inspected, you should probably make sure you have them looked at ASAP.

Don’t ignore routine brake inspections or repair and make sure you always put your safety first. Schedule an appointment to have your brakes checked and/or repaired at Courtesy Palm Harbor Honda today.
